Sign up for December classes now!

Hello All!  Here is the December class list.  Sign up for December classes now!

Red Scarf Project 2014!
Our shelves are filling up with red scarves!

The Fiber Factory and One Planet Yarn and Fiber has joined together this holiday season in supporting the Orphan Foundation of America’s Red Scarf Project: Foster Care for Success Program. Children that go through the foster care system often face challenges getting the education they need to lead happy and productive lives.

The Foster Care for Success program gives scholarships to further the education of kids who would not have the money to continue their education. In 2005 the Foster Care for Success program began sending the kids that were attending college or vocational schools a Valentine’s Day care package. These kids often don’t have family or parents who would send care packages to them. So, to show that someone cares – packages are sent with treats including a red hand knitted or crocheted scarf.
Last year our combined efforts netted 36 beautiful and varied crocheted and knitted scarves, one more than the year before.  Let’s see if we can top that this year! Come in and purchase your yarn and ask for the Red Scarf discount for this project. Drop off your scarves by December 6th! We'll plan a little party for the evening.

RED SCARF PROJECT GUIDELINES: Size: approximately 60” long and 5” to 8” wide. Scarves should be long enough to be wrapped around the neck, with tails long enough to be tied in the front. Style: Think unisex collegiate. Fringes are optional. Your scarf should drape, tie easily and be soft. Color: Red! However, this could mean burgundy, cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors, or multicolored hues including red. Finished & tagged: Yarn ends should be securely sewn in. For a personal touch, attach a tag saying “Handmade for You” with your first name, city, and group affiliation, if any. Donors have also included washing instructions, messages of encouragement, gift cards, and more.

We are thinking about starting up a few Friday Night out activities. Looking for feedback on what if any activities you would participate in.
And in spite of any and all rumors to the contrary, we are still here to help and encourage you to the completion of a successful project, and to serve your yarny needs. Come in and visit with us for a bit.

Don't forget our Rewards Card-
Yarn-a-Holics Anonymous 12 Stamp Rewards Program

Fiber Factory October Classes

A whole slew of classes are available for October.  Karen has been out of town, so we are posting the blog a little late.

HOORAY! We have a road again!
Construction on Main Street is winding down. We have pavement, parking
and left turns again. There is a little more work, but the contractors will be out of the downtown area October first. No more big vehicles and pounding jackhammers!

There will still be construction on Main Street east and west of the downtown mile, but that can be avoided by traveling on University, 1st Street or 1st Avenue.

The Fall Class Schedule is posted!

The Fall Class Schedule is posted! Here's the link!.

I am astounded that summer is almost over and I haven’t started my holiday gift crafting! If you find yourself in the same pickle, you will be delighted to find that our fall schedule holds many solutions to your problem. Our instructors have offered up a number of quick and easy project classes this time around as well as opportunities to finish up the ones that went to 'time out'.

We have found a new independent dyer that we will be featuring for a bit for our ‘Yarn of the Month.’ Marian of Marianated Yarns has supplied us with some really fun sock yarns the past couple of months and we intend to continue to feature them for a while. There will be a trunk show of Marianated Yarns in November.
There are also plans for a Fiesta Yarns Trunk Show, a book signing and a "Let's Do Lunch KAL" where we pair up a KAL with a Lunch Special at our favorite downtown restaurant.

Diane Marie is bringing bring back Bobbin Lace and introducing us to two beautiful, old lace techniques- Oya Needle Lace and Beaded Oya.
Our crochet instructors have a bunch of new things that will be great for gifts. Pictures will be posted as the samples come in.

Someone asked us if we had anything for teens to do, you know, not kids, but not yet adults. Since the answer was not really, we pondered for a bit, put it out to our teachers and figured let’s try a couple of fun classes for teens and see what happens. We are starting off with two scheduled during the holiday break and we hope to add more as we discover what these young folks want to do and when they can do it.

The Light Rail construction will clear out in the downtown area September 30.  Remember we are part of Metro’s Max Rewards program. Sign up for a Metro Max Rewards card on Metro Light Rail’s website, then show your card for a yarn discount.

Class prices have not increased here at the Fiber Factory since, well, since dirt. Unfortunately things like rent, utilities and insurance have increased in ridiculous amounts in the ensuing years. We have come to the sad realization that we need to increase the cost of classes a bit to offset our expenses in hosting them.  After researching what other shops are charging and input from a number of our customers, we decided that we needed to make some small changes in our price structure. Our classes are still the best value in town, and the variety continues to exceed all others.

And in spite of any and all rumors to the contrary, we are still here to help and encourage you to the completion of a successful project, and to serve your yarny needs.

Please advise anyone who tells you otherwise that you heard it here. Summer class schedule is posted on our website. Come on in out of the hot!

Not Such A Mystery KAL!

Many of you know one of our teachers, Karen.  She likes to design things to knit.  You have all seen her Sybil Scarf and her Hill and Dale Scarf on display in the store.

Well, she's done it again.  Karen created a lovely beaded beret and she's looking for test knitters.  We will be having 2 events so you can join in the fun of creation.  You will be the test knitters!

The first event is on Tuesday, March 25th at 6pm.  The second one is Friday, March 28th at 1pm.  The cost to participate is a $5.00 donation to the food bank in advance so we have a head count.  In return, once Karen has had the pattern fully edited and published, you will receive a free copy of the pattern, either in your Ravelry count, or if you do not have a computer, Karen will print you out a copy of the final pattern.

Here are the supplies you will need-

1 skein of Shepherds Wool in the color of your choice
2 long tubes of size 6 beads-shiny preferred
1 size 8US circular needle at least 32 inches long
1 beading needle
Stitch Markers
Tapestry Needle

The beret is on display at the cash register counter in the store.  We'd love to have you come and enjoy the fun!

Regards,
Terri, Susan and the Fiber Factory Gang
